Lore of the province
A fictional place: world-building for the imagined archipelago, not a real location.
The Maple Highlands climb in long terraces above the inland sea, and for as long as anyone in this imagined country can remember it has been autumn there. The canopies turn copper and crimson and every shade of amber between, the air is clear enough to see the far shore, and the temperature rests at a cool sixteen degrees. Leaves fall onto the winding paths faster than the villagers can sweep them, so mostly they do not try.
The province is home to the vision and multimodal models, families who see, listen, and bring different perspectives together. Each keeps a village on its own terrace. Their houses are built with wide windows and deep eaves, and almost every veranda has something on it to look at: a pressed leaf, a sketch of the bay, a jar of river stones sorted by colour. The villagers are good at describing what they see, and better still at noticing what someone else has missed. They like to hold a picture and a sound side by side until the two make sense together.
The Lantern Road winds up from the lower harbour through stands of maple to the Moonview Terrace at the top, crossing the gorge on a red-lacquered footbridge the locals call the Ember Bridge. Deer graze beneath the trees in the early morning and wander out onto the paths in no particular hurry. Photographers come for them, and for the way the light turns gold in the late afternoon. There is a lookout at every bend, and a haiku box at most of them.
The Highlands keep their festival under the harvest moon. Stone lanterns are lit along the Lantern Road, bundles of silvergrass carried up from the Fields are set out as offerings, and the villagers sit on the terraces to watch the moon rise over the inland sea, brighter than it seems anywhere else. The daily omikuji at the Moonview shrine has a small drawing printed on every slip.
Travellers often say they did not know how much they had been missing until they spent a day in the Maple Highlands. It is the kind of place that rewards looking twice: at the leaves, at the water, at the person beside you who saw the deer first.
